CARDINAL PELL VISITS HABERFIELD TENNIS CENTRE
We were indeed privileged to host a visit from the Archbishop of Sydney
His Eminence Cardinal George Pell on Friday 18th April 2008. Cardinal Pell, himself a devoted tennis player
for over 50 years was accompanied by Rev Fr Martin Maunsell, Chaplain of the
Association.
Archbishop Pell met with the Association Committee, Life Members and
representatives over morning tea in the clubhouse and took great interest in
the children attending the tennis camp.
Whilst addressing the juniors, Cardinal Pell asked the attentive
youngsters to raise their hands if they were really good players or just out
there to have fun and enjoy themselves.
Most of course indicated they were really good players.
Many thanks to Rev Fr Martin Maunsell for organising the visit and to
our Life Members and representatives who warmly welcomed his Eminence. Cardinal Pell’s visit was reported in the
Catholic Weekly and Tennis NSW online.

A STATE CHAMPION IS BORN

Association member and rising star Sonja Balic
took out the 2009 under 12 Medibank NSW singles title, held recently at the
Sydney Olympic Tennis Centre. This is an
outstanding achievement for any player.
Sonja’s mother Blanca another hardworking association volunteer, was
delighted with her daughters success.
Standing a tall 174cm Sonja swept her opponents aside to take the state
title. Congratulations Sonja.

INTERDISTRICT COMPETITION
The NSWCLTA was well represented with 27
players (excluding reserves) in 6 teams in the 2008 NSW Hardcourt Tennis Association
Interdistrict Competition. We would like
to thank the parents, players and managers who looked after the teams during
the competition. It’s a big ask to
transport and coordinate these youngsters who definitely enjoy the exposure to
such tough competition.

TENNIS CENTRE VOLUNTEERS
Once again a very small group of
voluntary workers assisted with the presentation of the tennis centre
complex. Our gardeners Domenic Flaherty
and Nancy Meduric-Ritossa worked tirelessly to tend to the plants during the
very hot weather. Committee member
Michael Flaherty and his sons Domenic and Adrian repaired the pathway damaged
by a neighbouring tree.
Over the Christmas New Year break the
tennis centre received a much needed facelift with a new coat of paint. Our volunteer painters did a sterling job and
the centre looks fresh and tidy. A big
thanks you to Nancy Meduric-Ritossa, Domenic Flaherty, Lucy Gonzalez, Adrian
Flaherty, Bob Williams, Stephanie Meduric-Ritossa, Craig Williams, Clare Wyse,
Brad Williams and many others.
TENNIS CENTRE
MANAGEMENT
Clare Wyse and Craig Williams do an
excellent job in running the tennis courts.
Their development of our juniors is paramount to the continued success
of the Association and the centre itself.
Keep up the high standard. During
the year much has been achieved at Haberfield.
Further details will be presented at the annual meeting.
MEMBERSHIP
At the end of 2008 the Associations’
membership comprised
Life Members 6 Adult Members 40 Junior
Members 122 Total 168
Many thanks to Sharyn Trimble for keeping
our membership records up to date.
Unfortunately Sharyn has resigned from this position but has offered to
continue to do it off the committee. The
Association places on record your accuracy and prompt reporting.
FINANCIAL SUMMARY
The Treasurer Mary Scott will outline
tonight the financial state of the Association with the presentation of the Income
and Expenditure Statement. Thanks to
Mary and the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Ngharee North for their great work
on the finances. Once again your Committee has worked tirelessly during what has been one
of the most demanding years I can remember. Please continue to support the Association as
we toil through challenging times.
This Annual Report is submitted for
approval and adoption on behalf of the Committee of the NSWCLTA Incorporated.
